Hello from Smedley Primary School in Denver, Colorado.

We live in the centre of the USA, between the Great Plains to the East and the Rocky Mountains to the west. Denver is at exactly 1 mile in altitude (about 1,600 metres) above sea level, which is why our city is nicknamed "The Mile High City".

Average snowfall between November and April is 1.4 metres and rainfall between May and September about 39 cm. Despite this, we still have an average of 300 sunny days a year.

About 150 years ago, the site destined for the future city of Denver was only an expanse of flat and desolate semi-desert. Then the "Rush to the Rockies" started. The zone started to fill with inhabitants: - speculators looking for precious metals, merchants, businessmen and settlers. Today Denver has a population of 531,105.

Denver is characterised by undulating high plains dissected by drainage channels, most of which are dry except following heavy rainfall. South Platte is the main navigable waterway which formerly divided the city into 2 parts: - a third to the West and two thirds to the East. Cherry Creek flows from the South East, joining South Platte near the city centre.

Denver has grown from the original 5.6 km² in 1858 to 94 km² in 1902 when the City and County were founded by a constitutional amendment. Present day Denver covers about 250 km².
